Request for Overseas Placements

Undergraduate physiotherapy students in their final year of study may apply for a short-term clinical placement in one of the Clinical Schools or private practices affiliated with The University of Melbourne. All placement requests are to be sent to The School of Physiotherapy

A limited number of places will be available each year to overseas students. Institutions with reciprocal student placement agreements with The School of Physiotherapy, The University of Melbourne will be given priority. Placements will be offered without charge for the duration of four to six weeks. Students will be responsible for supporting themselves financially and for finding their own accommodation. Allocations will be made in late December and notification will be sent out in January. Clinical places can not be guaranteed and are available only where there is capacity for the host institution.

Application process

With the letter of application each student must provide a certified copy* of:

  • A full academic record. Must include all tertiary studies undertaken.
  • A summary of the physiotherapy course content including clinical content
  • Assessment requirements from the student's home institution

* A certified copy is a photocopy of the original document which has the signature and official stamp of one of the following people: Barrister or Solicitor, Police in Charge of Station, Pharmacist, Doctor, Dentist; Principal of School, Justice of the Peace, Clerk of Court, indicating that they have sighted the original document. The signature and stamp must appear of every page of the document. A photocopy of a certified copy is not acceptable.

Selection criteria

Students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be in the final year of their course when undertaking the clinical placement
  • Be competent in English (For those applicants with English as a second language, English requirements should be comparable to the TOEFL scores required for University of Melbourne entry)

Selection will be based upon:

  • Academic performance in the student's physiotherapy program
  • Content of completed coursework
  • Availability of places
  • Reciprocal agreements

Closing dates for applications for overseas clinical placements will be 1 st November of the preceding year.

Insurance requirements

Students must supply a copy of professional indemnity insurance prior to taking up their placement. Students will be covered by Public Liability insurance while on placement.

Timeframe

  • Overseas students will be advised of placements by the end of January for the current year.
