The Study Experience  - Inside A PBL

Introduction

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is an established teaching method commonly used throughout the world in Health Professional education.

The philosophy of PBL is based on:

  1. the understanding that acquisition of new knowledge requires activation of prior knowledge
  2. knowledge is best remembered in the context in which it is learned.

Throughout the curriculum, students are presented with a variety of carefully designed problems that promote the exploration of the underlying biological, physiological, behavioural, and environmental determinants of health and the role of health care professionals.  The problem scenarios also require the integration of previous learning with the acquisition of new knowledge and are designed to provide a context that resembles future professional contexts as closely as possible.

PBL tutorials allow students to learn the content specified for each curriculum unit and to learn and practice group skills, share knowledge, become comfortable with changing leadership positions, and give and receive feedback.

PBL incorporates self-directed learning, clinical reasoning and critical appraisal of related literature.
