Undergraduate
Experiences
Overview Information
During the undergraduate years, students are encouraged to develop the
capacity and motivation for continuing independent learning,
inquiry and research. Students undertake theoretical and practical experience
enhancing their ability to act and communicate as responsible ethical
professionals with individuals and the community.
Basic and clinical sciences are integrated to develop knowledge, skills
and attitudes necessary for health education and the competent prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with physical disorders
and disabilities.
Problem based learning and practical sessions are an integral part of
the method of instruction.
All students are required to participate in practical experience. Practical
classes provide the opportunity to experience the roles of therapist,
patient and observer. It also enables the student to feel the sensations
and effects of the various forms of assessment and treatment in preparation
for the giving of explanations and advice to patients.
In the first year students are allocated to teaching hospitals of the
University of Melbourne for clinical studies for one afternoon
a fortnight and in the second year for a full week block. In the
third and fourth years students spend much of their time in the clinical
setting.
Students in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy have the opportunity to share
their study experience with a variety of nationalities and cultures. The
student body includes a proportion of International students as well as
exchange and study abroad visitors. The School of Physiotherapy
encourages its students to undertake studies at selected international
universities.
