Frequently Asked Questions

Top
What are the pre-requisites for the Bachelor of Physiotherapy?

Satisfactory completion of the VCE and a study score of at least 35 in VCE Units 3 & 4 English (any) and Chemistry, and one of Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or Physics. Local students must also undertake the UMAT.

Top
How do I get into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy?

Selection into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy is on the basis of academic merit.

Selection for local students is based on a combination of the applicant’s ENTER, performance in the UMAT, and level of performance in the prerequisite subjects.

Selection for international students is based on their performance in the prerequisite subjects and their overall academic ability.

If I don’t get into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy when I first apply what course should I take so that I might get into Physiotherapy the following year?

Selection does not give precedence to one course over another.

Given the difficulty in transferring from another course, students should choose a course they would be happy to complete in the event they do not succeed in transferring.

There is no set course or series of subjects that you must undertake in order to transfer into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.

Courses that are highly recommended include Science or Biomedical Science.

Top
Are there any Physiotherapy conversion courses available from my current tertiary course?

No.

Top
If I get into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy what credit points do I get for any previous study that I may have undertaken?

Applications for credit are assessed individually. As most subjects are integrated in years one and two of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, exemptions are rarely granted.

Top
If I accept entry into a different course can I then transfer across to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy at a later date?

Yes, provided you have met the prerequisites, including the UMAT for local students.

If you are studying at The University of Melbourne, you should apply for an Internal Transfer.

If you are studying at another institution, you should apply through VTAC.

If you are studying Physiotherapy at another University, it is extremely difficult to transfer to The University of Melbourne as preference is given to students who are not currently studying Physiotherapy.

Top
What are the entry requirements in regards to the scores I need to obtain?

To be considered as a school leaver, you must have met the prerequisites and obtained an ENTER of 96 or above.

To be considered as a non-school leaver, you must have met the prerequisites and your application will also be assessed on any full time study within the past five years. A High Distinction/Distinction average (80%) is required.

Top
How do I apply?

All local students applying for first year entry must apply through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre).

Applicants who are eligible for later year entry apply directly to the School of Physiotherapy.

International applicants who are undertaking their Year 12 / VCE / IB at a secondary school in Australia should apply on-line through VTAC.

Other international students who are undertaking their Year 12 studies overseas, and those in the Trinity Foundation Studies Program, should apply directly to the International Centre at The University of Melbourne as an international student (or through one of our overseas representatives).

What is the UMAT?

The UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) is an aptitude test developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of universities to help select candidates for degrees in medicine and health sciences.

Top

Top

Top
What is the percentage of Physiotherapy graduates that get jobs?

Top
How do I get in if I am a mature age student?

To be considered as a mature age student (non-school leaver), you must have met the prerequisites at either Year 12 or tertiary level and you must have sat the UMAT in the last two years. Your application will also be assessed on any full time study within the past five years and your UMAT result, a High Distinction/Distinction average (75%) is normally required. Applications should be made via VTAC.

Top
What if I didn’t obtain very high scores when I was in Secondary school? Is there another way I can still be accepted even with low scores?

Provided that you have the prerequisite subjects, applicants will need to take on full-time study and obtain strong results to be considered.
