Master of Philosophy

Masters by research degrees allow students to study a specific subject area in great depths. The program provides supervised postgraduate training in research aimed at increasing a candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the research process and to have the opportunity to develop, undertake and present a substantive independent research project.

Course structure

Students work throughout their candidature under the supervision of one or more staff members on a research topic that is subsequently reported in the form of a 30,000 to 35,000 word thesis.  The degree is awarded on the basis of examination of the thesis.  The Department of Physiotherapy can offer supervision in a range of research areas.  Close collaboration with a number of clinical schools is a feature of the department’s research profile.  Normally this degree is taken over a period of 18months full time or 3 years part time.  For further details of the departments areas of research interest and activity see research pages:

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry, a relevant field of science or related health science. Applicants will normally have an honours degree with an average of at least 75%.Graduates of certain professional degrees including the BPhysio and MBBS will be assessed individually.

Applicants who have first-class honours or who have completed a Master degree may be eligible to apply for a PhD.  Other applicants will normally be enrolled in a Master degree and may apply to transfer to the PhD program if acceptable academic progress is made. Both local and international applicants will need to meet English language requirements
