Master of Physiotherapy by Coursework (Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy)
The Master of Physiotherapy (Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy) enables qualified and experienced clinicians to broaden and deepen their theoretical and clinical skills in the area of cardiothoracic physiotherapy. The course recognises the need to adopt principles of adult learning and emphasises the importance of facilitating graduates to develop independent, self-directed and critical philosophies in the field of cardiothoracic physiotherapy.
The course consists of three core subjects, an elective subject, and four stream subjects. The core subjects explore the physiological bases of physiotherapy practice, provide a framework for evaluation of evidence for physiotherapy and develop advanced communication skills and awareness of professional and ethical issues in physiotherapy and the broader healthcare community. An elective allows the student to extend their experience and expertise. Four stream-specific subjects provide students with the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills specific to cardiothoracic practice. Two theoretical stream subjects present advanced knowledge and understanding of applied anatomy and cardio respiratory physiology, and their applications to clinical practice. A clinical subject provides students with opportunities to acquire cutting edge information and skills related to cardiorespiratory pathology, current investigative, diagnostic and treatment approaches in a variety of medical, surgical and rehabilitation conditions including paediatric conditions. This subject also provides clinical placements that allow students to broaden their clinical practice experience and expertise. A fourth stream subject offers a cardiorespiratory specific elective unit.
This course promotes development of skills, knowledge and attributes of a reflective, evidence-based practitioner who might seek to specialise in cardiothoracic physiotherapy.
