Master of Physiotherapy by Coursework (General)
The Master of Physiotherapy (General) course at the University of Melbourne recognises the needs of some physiotherapists to gain further knowledge and experience in a number of different areas of practice. This may be especially so for physiotherapists in rural or remote areas. This course will enable students to adopt principles of adult learning and it emphasises the importance of facilitating graduates to develop independent, self-directed and critical philosophies to further their knowledge in the field of physiotherapy. To achieve these outcomes, teaching and learning focuses on problem-based learning with exchange of knowledge by its participants.
The course consists of three core subjects, an elective subject, and four stream subjects. The core subjects support the physiological basis of physiotherapy practice, provide skills in evaluating evidence for physiotherapy, and develop an understanding of professional and ethical issues in physiotherapy and the healthcare system. An elective taken from subjects within or outside the School of Physiotherapy allows the student to broaden their experience and expertise. Four stream subjects must be chosen which will allow students to broaden their knowledge base in physiotherapy. The stream subjects available range across the specialty areas of physiotherapy.
Subjects should be chosen early and in consultation with the program co-ordinator to ensure:
- subject availability as some stream subjects of the Masters are only offered every two years
- early start dates for some subjects are taken into account
- that subjects satisfy the background and needs of the student
