Sports & Exercise Medicine
Research Program
Program leader: A/Professor Paul McCrory
Overview
Exercise and physical activity plays an important role in the maintenance of health and well-being throughout life. The discipline of sports and exercise medicine is concerned with the total health care of the exercising person. With the recognition of this area in 2007 by the Australian Federal government as a distinct medical specialty, a new focus on clinical activity and research has emerged.
There are four broad areas of the sports and exercise medicine program:
- Exercise used in the primary and secondary prevention of disease states (e.g. cardiovascular disease, obesity etc) and the use of exercise as an adjunct to the management of chronic disease
- The epidemiology, management, cost benefit and prevention of injury in the exercising population.
- The understanding of the function and response to injury of muscle, tendon and fascia in the normal individual as well as in injury states. This involves both applied and basic research
- The study of sports related concussion and other forms of traumatic brain injury
