Brain Structure and Function in Individuals with and without Knee Osteoarthritis
What is the purpose of the study?
There is currently no cure or ideal treatment for knee osteoarthritis. People with knee osteoarthritis often experience pain, muscle weakness, joint stiffness and impaired sensation that can alter the way they walk and move. It is therefore likely that there are changes to the parts of the brain that control movement and process sensory information. However, there has been little research into how knee osteoarthritis affects the brain. This study aims to investigate leg movements, leg sensation and the structure and function of the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in people with and without knee osteoarthritis.
Volunteering your time to this study will contribute to understanding the effect of knee osteoarthritis on the brain. Better understanding of the role of the brain in knee osteoarthritis will likely aid in the development and assessment of treatment methods for knee osteoarthritis in the future.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to find out about their balance and movement patterns and receive an image of their brain.
