Professor Joan McMeeken, DipPhysio, BSc (Hons), MSc
Professor Joan McMeeken is the Foundation Professor and was Foundation Head of the School of Physiotherapy and Associate Dean Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne from 1991 to 2006.
From 1990 Professor McMeeken was responsible for the development of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs, the appointment of staff, the School’s research and its physical facilities and infrastructure. The School has rapidly gained recognition as a leading centre in physiotherapy research and education. She has fostered the School’s multidisciplinary centres: the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine (CHESM) led by Professor Kim Bennell, the Rehabilitation Sciences Research Centre (RSRC) at Austin Health led by Professor Mary Galea and the Centre at Kingston led by Professor Meg Morris.
Professor McMeeken’s research and clinical interests include physiotherapy education and accreditation, health promotion and health management through education, injury prevention and rehabilitation. She has a particular interest in musculoskeletal problems of young people including performing artists.
She is continuing with research teams in professional practice, education and back pain and some teaching whilst undertaking reviews of research and academic programs and leading accreditation responsibilities in Australia.
